Ok- So I bought an 05' night this year, and I love it. My friend at work loves it too, but can't afford that much money. So his next favorite bike is the sporster, and although he likes the price better, he dosn't like the look of the sportster gas tanks.
My question is this: do fat bob tanks fit sporty models? I realize that we'd have to do the speedo on the tank too, I'm just curious if anybody here has done this and maybe an approx. cost related. Is it something we could do in our garage? Dealer?
Any thoughts?
If anybody has done this to their sportsters I'd love to see the pictures.
I put one on my old Sportster. It came from Drag Specialties and cost about $300. The kit included the dash kit and the stock speedometer fit right in the dash kit. Just had to splice and add wires to get it to reach.
Since it comes unfinished, I ended up pulling the fenders and getting the whole schebang custom painted. That was an additional $800. Not a great picture but here's what it looked like.
I just put a 2 piece tank on my sporty. It is actually a bigger tank then my neighbor's Fatboy LOL. As you can see, you dont have to move the instruments if you dont want to. I prefer to keep my instruments on the bars where I can see them without taking my eyes too far off the road. The paintjob I did myself for $50.00. I also relocated the ignition key up on the dash.
I got a 3.5 gallon duel tank on my 86' and it looks great. I also have a bigger rear fender that makes the bike look more like a fatboy and I get alot of complements on it from other sporty owners at rallies.
Hey guys new to the forums, I just bought a 05 Sportster L, I have been thinking the same thing about the tank, so I had to take it in to the dealer today, to have it fixed already. So I was asking about the Sportster custom tank, they said for less then $500.00 bones I could order one from them, and have it painted the same color as mine, and it will have Harley Davidson on side of the tank. I think I will be doing this soon.
