Bought my Nightster used last year from a HD dealer with a one year warranty. The warranty was a must on it cus I didn't want to risk buying a polished up piece of crap and being stuck trying to figure it out. I did not have any problems and after running it for a season, I do not anticipate any either. So, question is do I renew it or let it lapse?
I am mechanically inclined and have rebuilt multiple engine/ trans combos in the past on cars but never worked on a bike before. Basically it's about $600 a year that could probably be spent wiser! I think if I were looking to sell it, the warranty would be a good incentive to prospective buyers, but i have no intention to get rid of it.
Let me know your thoughts. M

I like you can work on my own. Makes no since to buy it for us. If you were to totally blow it up, then yes, you would have saved some money. However you know what it sounds like now and that it is OK. Probably last a long time now. Probably is a good selling feature but would it even pay for itself then or would you just be giving it to them. You cannot add it to the blue book price. Would just open up more people that may be interested in it. We are saying same thing don't you think. Also heard others quote twice that for a Softail. To me it's a hobby. I do not finance or insure labor on that.

It's a gamble.
$600 a year versus potential cost of failures.
A - You state the bike has been flawless.
B - You could use the $600 in other places.
C - You are mechanical.
How any miles you ride each year should also be factored.
Where you ride to too (interstate or local).
Equate the odds of a breakdown and a tow.
Make list search for known failures on your year model XL and attain the parts cost.
For example Rocker Box Cover leak....DIY = $60. Shop = $250.00.
Reads like you could fore go the warranty and take the proverbial risk, yet only you can decide.

is more like DIY = $60. Shop = $250.00. Warranty $650. So the DIY is really only $10. My Harley warranty was $50 deductible and did not include towing.
When my bike had it it was used twice (two $50. charges) and they never did find the problem. I finally fixed it. See my album for the alternator rotor. Towing is free on Progressive Insurance policies
People who buy extended warranties often buy them on multiple Items,,'
They would not offer them unless they can trun a profit.
Just like casino gambling,,odds are stacked in the House's favor.
Shure your gonna hear of people getting them and needing them,,
But yer not gonna hear the many say they never needed It.
Most times If a Sportster engine fails after a year or 5-10-20,000 miles
It's because of the owner and or level of maintenance,,or doing the
maintenance wrong or miss use,
Or bad rding habbits.
You "Hammer" any engine and you Increase the odd's of a failure..
I would never pay for the possiblity of future repairs unless they would give me my
money back at the end if not used..
And we know thats not gonna happen.

I agree 100% ... Odds are def in the dealers favor otherwise why would they offer it to you ? it like insuring your bet in black jack ... its a suckers bet imo !
