Default Muffler repack

Quick question for you guys out there....

Is repacking a muffler really as easy as it sounds?
Simply wrapping fiberglass packing around the baffle, and sliping it back in?

I ask because my neighbours have had something to say about my V&H slipons, and i cant say i blame them, they are kinda loud. Will repacking it just take some of the high tones out, or just a flat dB reduction?

Boy thats a tuff one,,
Adding packin can quiet them down and should be easy.
I've herd of lots of people doing that on the Big dressers.
Does V&H sell a quiet baffle ??
I would think that some DB reduction Is all you can hope for...

I think It would depend on the baffle when you get It pulled out.

It's an easy mod that can accomplish a couple of pluses other than just a quieter ride... it also gives the V&H a deeper rumble and a better air flow and back pressure. Go to www.mcmaster-carr and click on ceramic fiber, scroll down to silica fabric, and buy 1 foot of SKU 8799K3 @ $9.26 plus $4.39 shipping... total $13.65. The 1 foot is 3 feet wide so there is plenty of fabric to double wrap each baffle.

OOPS... sorry, I just noticed that you are in Australia. You can't just use fiberglass... it "wears" or "burns" out over time. The new ceramic silicas will last the lifetime of the bike and are easier to install. Hopefully you will be able to find a distributor in Australia.

Glad to see this thread. I've considered adding some packing to quite things down a little and the only thing I've come up with to secure the material is baling/safety wire.
Let us know how it goes.

Thank you handyhoward, I am going to give that a try with my quiet baffles I have on the way.

Cool What a differnece!

Well, got my quiet baffles for my bss yesterday. Went out and put them on when I got home from work today. Was Very easy to get the old baffles out. I just put the bike up on the lift, removed the end caps and baffle screw, got a little angled wrench to hook the baffle and it slid right out. First thing I did with the new quiet baffles is remove the crap fiberglass and toss it in the can. Then I wrapped them with two layers of the ceramic silicas material I ordered from www.mcmaster-carr Secured it with a little foil tape I had laying around (just small pieces) to make it easy to wrap and stay on there while I installed the baffle. This stuff is very slick and kind of silky? don't know how else to describe it. Made it easy to twist the new baffles right into place and should last forever. I also used some Smartpartz Hard Kore Quiet Baffles with the vance and hines quiet baffles to tone it down a little more. Once I got every thing in and all back together I fired her up and couldn't believe the difference in sound. Night and day difference. Has a much deeper tone and sounds much more like that classic Harley sound and not just ear bleeding loud like before. Still way louder then stock! This may be just what I was looking for. Can't wait to take it for a ride and see how it sounds and feels.

So to make a short story long, take handyhoward's advice and get some of that fabric from mcmaster carr to re-wrap your baffles in. If you still need to tone them down some more try the smartparts baffles too. They get great reviews here on the forums. I will report back with results of the test ride if any one is interested.

No, the quiet baffles are smaller in diameter and have a plug in the end similar the the stock muffler setup
