I was just reading the post about the 1200 not starting. I know that you finally figured out that it was a battery problem, but in the midst of all this there were several posts about starting with the enrichiner **** fully out. This is sometimes necessary when the temps are below 45 but usually the best way to cold start is to crank on the throttle 2 -3 times then hit the sart button. There is an accerator pump in the carb that shoots fuel into it when you open your throttle. This basically gives it the extra fuel it needs to start. Once it starts just snug up your friction screw and let the engine idle at a slightly higher RPM than normal until it is warmed up. This will allow the engine to warm up without running extremely rich and contributing to gas fouled plugs. Also it will keep your bike from excessive smoking from the fuel. I do this with my carbureted Fat boy and my Sporty and it works very well.
Give it a try next time and put a ton of more life in your plugs.
Interesting post. I was told to never roll the throttle before starting, instead always use the enricher **** since that is what it is there for. I hope someone will post some clarification.
Mine has been put to sleep for the winter now, but come next season I will definately give this a try especially since I don't find riding in the colder temps comfortable enuf...it should work.
Great day in the morning. Have you guys never owned a car with a carb or has it been so long that you owned one that you forgot how to start it? Pumping the gas only makes sense. I give my Sporty 2 or 3 pumps before every cold start or it ain't gonna start. My Jeeps got a Weber carb on it. It takes about 8 pumps to get her to fire. She usually fires for about 2 seconds, then you gotta give her 3 more then she fires starts right up. Do it any other way on a very cold morning and it ain't gonna start.
I'm sure each bike is gonna be a little different. It may take a little experimenting to figure out how many pumps you need to get a start instead of a flooded engine.
Enrichener ****....That alway's cracks up. A new fangled word for a choke.
The cold weather starts 35-45 deg. I have to roll the throttle back 3 full times w/ the enricher **** out full for 30- 60 sec. been doing this for the last 3 weeks, the plugs look fine.
Since the cooler weather has settled in, I've been pumping the throttle a couple of times before cold starts. Then let her warm up with the choke a little over half out for the time it takes to put on my gloves, helmet, jacket etc.
