I just purchased my second sportster an 06 883 r. I previously owned a 86 883 back in the day. I just put on a set of Vance and Hines short shot staggered and a SE air cleaner kit along with a rejet. My question is, I just noticed since I haven't been riding much due to the weather being bad on my days off is a hose coming from the bottom of the carb routed to behind the front belt spocket cover. Is this normal? The hose wasn't there when my stock air cleaner was on. I wanted to ask here since I didn't want to call the dealer and look like an idiot. Thanks in advance for your help and I look forward to being part of the forum.
Sorry I can't answer your question, but how do you like the short shots? How loud are they compared to the stock pipes... Like on a scale of 1-10, where the stock pipes are a 1, how loud are they? Thanks!
The V & H pipes are great. I think for the money you can't go wrong. I had straight drags on my 86 and they were a little to loud but that is how I bought it. The pipes are louder than stock but they sound great. I believe a Harley should sound like a Harley. The stock pipes are just to quiet for me. Even the service manager was impressed with the sound along with everybody else at the dealer at the time. Check out their webpage. My dealer ordered them for me and the price was right on line with what V & H was asking maybe even a little cheaper. Good luck and feel free to ask anymore questions.
I still have stock a/c, so I'm not sure, but I believe I've read on here before that the SE a/c has a hose to drain any excess oil to prevent it from accumulating in the a/c cover and then out onto the bike.
The other end of the hose is connected to the carb, not the air cleaner. If it is some sort of fuel bowl overflow, seems kind of odd to me that it just allows the fuel to **** all over the place.
Is yours a California model? There is (was) a hose connected to the back of the stock air cleaner that routed gases back to the little tank underneath forward of the rear wheel. Once you get the S/E air cleaner, that hose doesn't go anywhere on the back of the A/C. I just zip tied it to the blowby tubes, cause it was rubbing on some of the aluminum and marking it up.
I asked this a while ago, and the 49 state bikes, at least for the 05 year didn't have that hose. If you have the shop manual you can see the difference by looking at the 49 state diagrams then the Calif specific bikes. (euros might be the same, can't remember)
It is a fuel bowl drain. There is a straight slot screw that will let you drain the fuel from the bowl if you want to turn the carb upside down. (Like for a change in jets). MoCo says to route the tube in back of the oil filter but mine was where everybody has mentioned.
