Default 10K service

I'm at about 8500 miles on my sporty right now, and I was looking ahead to the 10K service. I was looking through the manual, and the list of stuff to do didn't seem too difficult. I do have the service manual by the way. How many of you have done this service by your self and how tough was it? Also, any tips for doing it by my self?

It's not difficult. I did my 10,000-mile service on my Dyna, myself. Just read through the service items listed in your owners manual, making notes on the tools and supplies you'll need; try to collect everything before you start. Both inch-pound and foot-pound torque wrenches were needed, on mine. You'll need to jack up the front-end to do the fall-away check. The list of critical fasteners (to torque) is in your service manual. Save some empty plastic jugs to transport the used oil. I found that an old large-ish darkroom tray makes the perfect drain pan--even has a pour-lip. It's a good idea to clean drain-plug threads very carefully, install new o-rings AND a tiny bit of teflon-paste thread sealant.

Edit to add:

Wanabe--be sure to check/replace wheel bearings while the wheel is off. My rear bearings needed replacing at 9,000 miles.

I do all the services myself. While the bike is in warranty I take a pic of the speedo, service manual, oil, filter and the tools along with keeping a list of all the checks that the periodic service calls for. Then I write down the results of each check.

I have saved a small fortune over the years. Also do my own tire changing. Buy a couple of inexpensive tire spoons and save even more.

Harbor Freight has inexpensive motorcycle changing tools. Want to go even cheaper? Take two lengths of 2X4 bolt one end into a garage wall stud and another through that lever hanging down. Place it on the tire close to the rim and push down.

You will get a great deal of satisfaction of doing your own service. It should be a part of biking.

The typical dealer labor rate is about $80/hr. Consider that you are paying yourself the $80/hr or is your time worth more?
