What is all envolved with a 10k service on a 1996 heritage softail? I am new at this but can turn a wrench and dont want to pay Harley $420.
Thank you for the help.

I (and many others) would first recommend you get the Factory Service Manual from HD. Other brands of manuals are too generalized and give only basic information that is seldom model specific.
There's nothing special about the 10K service except the steering head bearings check/service. Many of them already have a grease fitting but they really don't require grease like the manual states. But it is a good idea to check the load per the manual.
Otherwise, it's all just changing fluids including the fork oil, inspecting this, that and the other. Wheel bearings are supposed to be serviced, but if you take care of that at tire change time, they're good till next tire change except the front. The fronts will last approx 2.5 rear tires, so it's a good idea to service those bearing everytime the rear is done. And everything else is just stuff you do normally with mileage anyway. Of course, if you buy one that you're not familiar with, it's a good idea to go the "whole 9 yards" so you know what you have from the start.
THanks for the help. It rides so well I do no think the front shock oil necessary at this time. I think I am just going to change the fluids and check the bearings.

Why wait till something fails to fix it. Preventative mantainence is cheaper and safer in the long run. Also if you search, somewhere on these boards is a mantainence schedule.
