I have a 883 custom and have the quick detach windshield. It came with the bike and is basically right in my line of sight. Can you order a replacement one and reuse the hardware? I think if I can buy a shorter replacement one I might use it. Otherwise I would rather fight the wind.
mine is the same... just takes a coupla trips to get used to it. once you get it its a great ride. nice not having bugs in the teeth and too much wind in the face. around town i pop it off.
in the beginning you have to kinda look down then up and eventually you dont notice the height of the shield.
good luck and ride safe!

On mine you have a "play" of about 1" up or down on the mounting hardware. For me, the best height was just to stick your arm straight out and your finger should touch the top of the shield (when level for the arm). Everyone is different, you will get those who hate windshields - and those that love them. Once it's adjusted right...well, I love it.
Seems we all have our problems, many folks like the idea of a windshield till they get it then the problems come out. Too high, too short, too far away, too close. you get the idea.
The optimum windshield is about upper chest height, most models the polycarbonate sheet is replaceable (as you noted) so they can be adjusted to suit your style (is all about style here).
I personally have had the sport shield and the full harry, honking, how dose that thing stay on the bike shield. both have advantages. By far the bigger one is much more comfy to ride with and at 6' the height is no problem (I sit up then slowly slouch till im ridin the back fender half-asleep). Try riding with it a while, I believe most are like the rider above so the height is arbitrary.
the windshield top should be even with your nosetip..
look over it ,not through it .
if it cannot be adjusted , cut it down.
there are threads about how to do it ..
it is very easy to do..and inexpensive
