Another MAP question
I apologize if this has been asked, but I'm not seeing it anywhere... I'm going to add a SE stage 1 AC to the SEII slip ons. I'm thinking about having my dealer just do a simple download for the ECM. I know that from the factory they tend to run on the leaner side. Can I expect it to still run kind of lean after the download? I don't plan on doing anything else to the engine on this bike so the SE tuner and dyno time is way too expensive to only use it once. And I would rather not have to try and stuff a Fuelpak into my bike. Thanks!
It will still run at the same AFR as it does now. From what I'm hearing the Stage 1 download really doesn't change this any as it still is EPA compliant. There is some debate as to whether or not you even need to do a Fuel Pack after a stage 1 ac and slip ons. However, if you don't the bike will run just as lean as it does now...just won't get any worse.
A dyno WOULD get you the most power out of your setup even with a stage 1 setup. However, most folks don't feel that it's worth the money to do a dyno tune on a stage 1 bike since the aftermarket tuning solutions get them close enough. I wouldn't waste your money on the Dealer stage 1 download as it gives you no real benefits that the stock ECM probably can't compensate for anyway. To get a bit more performance out of your bike, I'd go with a Fuelpak. I know you don't want to, but something like that (or a PCV, etc) would be a better use of funds than the dealer download.

My understanding is that the ECM cannot compensate when you have both the SE slip ons and intake and so the MAP download would allow it to do so. I just didn't want to mess with installing a fuelpak which sounds like a real pain in the butt to cram into a sportster. My other concern is the warranty if something were to happen. If they do the download, and something happens, I would like to think Harley would be to blame. I know a race tuner with dyno time is probably the best in the end, but I'm just not interested in investing that kind of cash into a sporty. Maybe I'll have to consider just leaving it alone and learn to love the occasional hiccups and popping.
