I really worried about mine at first because I spent $130 on an HD helmet. I used to carry a cable lock, but I got lazy. I just leave mine hanging from the handle bars with my glasses and gloves in it. Nobody around here wears helmets, so nobody wants mine apparently.
The HD listing for that lock states: "Universal Mount Helmet Lock, Designed to be installed on any 7/8" to 1-1/4" diameter tubing such as engine guards, saddlebag guards, and frame tubes."
Then it says: "45732-86, Fits all models (except '04-later XL models.) "
I was worried about the same thing so I attached two HD helmet locks to my engine guard; one on each side. They work great. If I have time tonight I will post a pic or two.
90% of the time I leave the helmet(s) on the handlebars. For those other times like going downtown Detroit or out to dinner where I won't see the bike for a few hours, I'll lock it/them up.
I bought the Harley Davidson one and it wouldn't fit my downtube just like it said. So I put it on my left passenger footpeg? It's hardly noticeable and I lock it up and put the helmet on the peg. You can hardly see it in this picture, it the chrome behind the primary cover.
