Default Describe 5th Gear on an Iron 883

I presently ride a 2005 Suzuki C50 Boulevard. 805cc. 5 speed shaft. Mono shock.

Here's how shifting works. 10-20-30-40-50 is 1-2-3-4-5, pretty much. If riding 50+, it's 5th gear. If busting onto the highway, it's wind up to 60-65 in 4th and then shift to 5th. Feels great. It's like a rocket into 5th.

50-70ish, feels great. 75-80, gets buzzy. Over 80, or any length of time over 70, and I want to shift to 6th. There is no 6th. 90-100, it'll do it, but it don't feel like it likes it.

I'm a commuter. It's common for me to ride 5 days a week. Getting 50+mpg and doing it on a bike? Hell yeah. Makes going to work fun.

What I want is something a little bigger and simpler. The Iron 883 looks like the thing. What I'd like to hear is Iron 883 riders talk about 5th gear. How's it compare to my description of the C50? How do you describe 5th gear?

Thanks.

Oh, and PS, how about 2up? Cost and ease of installation of forward controls? Got floor boards? Heel/toe shifter? I'm spoiled on the C50 footing arrangement.

Makes me want to shift to 6th but there is no 6th it does ok 60-70 after that it's pushing as you say it feels like it doesn't like it... I've done 110 for about a mile though and still had more

I can ride comfortably in 4th at 60-65. 5th is boggy at 60. 75-80 sounds and rides really nice in 5th. You won't be disappointed unless you're trying to do over 110....

My buddy has an M50. I have a 883 Iron. 2 up riding on the Iron will require you to change rear shocks, probably front forks as well. The M50 is way more comfortable than the Iron. As far as speed, they are about the same. In my opinion the 883 Iron gets buzzy at highway speeds, but that's just me. I would love to have a 6th gear.

If you want to commute on a comfy bike, the Boulevard is the ****. My buddy has a M50 and it'll kick the socks off my 883. If you want a rough ride on a brick seat with the engine winding out at high speeds then get the Iron.

I don't hit 5th til at least 65-70. After that, it pulls nicely for cruising speeds. Anything under that and I feel like it's lugging in 5th.

Cool

Gear charts,,,
My 1200R Lets a little Buzz thru about 4,200 rpms,,,goes away
above 4,400 rpms.
Turns 3,500 In 5th at 75 mph

883's do about 4,200 rpms at 75 mph
I bet the 883 could handle a couple extra teeth on the front sprocket
and with a Stage one still pull hard.

Useless Info:
The 1200 engine weighs 5 Lbs less,,due to thinner cyclinder walls
with the bigger bore XD

As for the Suzi q M50,,,well
Dancin with a fat chick Is fun,,untill your freinds see ya doin It XD

Sounds EXACTLY the same to me as my Iron.

Forward controls are a NO brainer. Would never go back to mids - they are easy to install with modest mechanical skills. I can do it in about an hour and a half. No floor boards - it's a sportster not a tourer.

I agree full heartedly! Although I'll usually shift into 5th above 55.

5th gear on a 883 Iron is like 5th gear on every other 883 Sportster.......

Just sayin!
