Yes you can buy the filter and install it.You will need a rejet though. For the difference in money you should just get the entire kit with the backing plate and then do the rejet. That of course is just my opinion.Hopefully you have already done the exhaust to get the most performance bang for your buck.

I thought k&n made a filter for the stock set up. if your leaving your bike stock and not using a hi-flow a/c set up you should be ok.

You will get no increase in air flow with the stock backing plate - it is restricted...

i tried the k&n filter in the stock can. with slip ons i still ran lean. checked around local indy shops and found a take-off Kuryakyn a/c with a k&n filter for $100.00. $70.00 for rejet and life is good. it's not that pricey to complete the stage 1. big bang for little $$ imho.
i find it amazing that the rich guys switch out chrome goodies so often just for the current fads. do some calling around.

I vote Big Sucker, it is awesome, the integrated crankcase vent backing plate assembly is well made. You do need a re-jet though.

How much to buy a K&N alone? I paid $$79 for mine on ebay plus $34 for the cover, dyno test $40 plus main jet $4. There you go!
