Default breaks

Hey guys need some help. I looked at my front and rear break. The pads seem to be sitting on the rotor all the time. is it supposed to be this way. I pulled the front break lever and the pad didnt move but something behind it did. Need some help. Also how do i know if i am pushing to hard on my rear break and making if fishtail or if its just to touchy.

Have you done anything to your brakes or calipers? The "thing" moving behind it is the piston. It is what moves your brake pads to the rotors.
If you haven't already, get yourself a factory service manual!

Put it on a stand and spin the wheel. If you hear the pads rubbing you may have a problem. If you don't have a stand or something to lift the bike try shutting the engine off while you are still rolling. If you hear the pads rubbing you may have a problem. How many miles are on your brake pads?

pads will always touch the rotor with minimum force when the brakes are not used. All brakes are this way; even cars.

My bike is a 2002 and only has 4300 miles on it but the douche who had sold it to me let it sit for a while. It seems like he let it sit b.c there is rust on some of the chrome and it lookes aged. But when i roll i can hear the pads rubbing the rotor. I didnt know they touch with minimum force.

Like erbilabuc say they will make minimal contact, if it doesn't keep the wheel from turning, you're good!

Oh thank god you guys are life savers. I was going to sh*t a brick. I bought the thing for way to much and sunk to much money into it for 3 leaks. I am glad i dont have to worrie about it for now. Man i made a mistake buying this bike though. Wish i could take it back. But i guess i will just learn like always.

Don't sweat it crazy walt. We are always learning once you stop thats not good cuz then you will become a know it all lol. I have an analogy when you experience bad things in life you then learn to appreciate the good things in life. Just think if everything was so perfect wouldn't life be so boring?
Have you tried locking up your. ABS brakes in your car yet. Now that's a mindf@ck the first time ya hear that noise.

Like was said the brake pads on all vehicles well rest on the rotors and most bikes will have a bit of light scrapping sound when rolling. As long as the wheels roll free and the brake are stopping fire I would not worry. 4300 miles is nothing. My XL50 has almost 19K on it and still on the OEM pads, fronts will be replaced at the end of this season, but still at like 20% left and the rear have aobut 40-50% left.
