All of a sudden it's cranking slow and barely catching. Put the meter on the battery and then start it and the reading doesn't change when I rev it. The headlight doesn't react. Could it be the regulator??
using analog needle meter, looks like about 11Vs when off, doesn't change when it starts and revs.
I put a charger on it for a while and it showed 12.5Vs and 75% charged. It started pretty easy one time and dropped to 25% charged. I think it is time for a new battery after 2+ years in the Florida Keys heat.
With the bike running at a fast idle, you should see a minimum of 13.5 VDC across the battery. Less than that, and something in the charging circuit (regulator and/or stator) is bad.
If the voltage does not increase at 2,000 RPM or so, then there's a good chance your charging system is not functioning properly. You will need to evaluate the charging system to determine what is wrong.
Unless you address the charging system, a new battery will not make any difference. It will go dead too the same as the current battery, provided the charging system is not functioning properly.
