It varies....all the time. You shouldn't rely on that stupid little thing. It's virtually useless.
What you should do is set your trip meter every time you get gas. I do it this way, I have a 3.3 gal tank, and usually get around 50mpg or so. I know that I could go about 150 miles on a tank without worry. So when I fill up, I set the trip meter to zero and when I get to around 120-150 miles on it I fill up. Works every time. You can also check your gas mileage this way as well.

I do this as well, I usually fill up between 100-120 miles.
Mine seems pretty consistent and the light comes on after using up about 2.1 gallons. Your light may be different so you just have to keep track for a couple of refills to find your number.
Agree with jbyun, you have about 1 1/4 gallons left. I usually see about 90-96 before the light comes on. Your range really depends on your right hand though.
Carry a gallon of gas in a water bottle and run it out of gas so you know how far it goes then next time the light comes on fill it up and do the math,.
Zero your trip odometer and ride a few tanks for 75-100 miles. Divide the miles ridden by the amount of fuel put in, there is your average MPG. Now multiply that times 3.3, there is your estimated range until you are completely bone dry. I don't know why someone would ever try to run that low though. I really don't have sympathy for people that run out of gas. I'm looking for a gas station when I hit 100 miles or the light comes on, whichever comes first.
On my 2011 custom with a 4.5 gallon tank, the light comes on at about 140 miles. I've run her up to 155 without fueling but I get nervous. I like to fill it up as soon as the light comes on.
