Default HELP! 2005 XL1200C Chokes out and dies

I have a 2005 XL1200C, while riding home from work the other day I pulled up to a stop sign and as I was coming to a stop the bike shut off, I restarted it with no problems.

The next morning I started the bike as usual, Full choke for about 1 min then half choke for 1/2 mile then close choke. Once the bike got to normal operating temperature the bike choked out and died. I tried to restart to no avail. Once the bike cooled down for about an hour or 2 it started right up, rather then risking pushing my bike home again I let it run in the driveway, once again it choked out and died once warmed up and wouldn't restart until cool.

Today I tried to start just to let it idol for the battery and it would not fire at all. Coincidently I tried to turn it over too many times and now have a Battery Tender on................

My first instinct says Ignition Control Module, any help would be appreciated!

I would pull the plugs and see how they look. Start from there.

HDXXX-Do you think that the plugs could foul out after the bike is warm? I assumed that if they were firing cool they'd still fire warm.......

I would check out the fuel system also, maybe got some crud in your gas that is slowing the fuel through the petcock filter, emptying the float bowl quicker than it can get refilled. If the 05 is the same as the 06 the fuel valve is vacuum operated from a hose running from the carb. Maybe an issue there?
Pushing your bike sucks, hope you find what ails it

I'd say you got some bad gas somewhere...when's the last time you filled & have you been using any type of fuel treatment (i.e. SeaFoam, Sta-Bil, etc.)? Tender isn't going to charge your battery much...recommend you head over to Wal Mart & get cheap charger w/multi-settings.

I got fuel about a month ago 93 octane from a reputable gas station there is some lucas fuel treatment in it, I am currently stationed in Washington, D.C. where apparently they put ethanol in all of their fuels, could this be causing an issue? The tender is serving it's purpose......for now. What can I check, remove, clean before I start buying stuff?

Could the lucas fuel treatment be causing a problem? I rode for 60 miles on the tank that had the lucas before this issue arose and it was the first time I ever put lucas in my bike.......

I would try leaving the gas cap loose going for a ride and see if it still does it. If the vent is plugged up the tank won't vent properly. If that checks out good, check out your coil. Some quit when they get hot when they are on the way out. No spark/ no run.,,

Mine did that a while ago, the spark wire had separated inside the boot causing the plug to not receive the spark.

Default Maybe it's the CKP sensor ~ see link

I just got thru reading about identical symptoms to yours along with the solution here: http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/s...ad.php?t=34308

There are a lot of posts there, so to summarize the solution, it's been the crank position sensor failing.
Yeah, and I always thought when they went bad, the bike wouldn't even start. It appears that sensor can also go bad and not always throw codes.
