Default Cable routing

I just bought an H/D quick release windshield, do I really have to re-route the clutch and throttle cables like the instructions say, I put the windshield on, and it doesn't seem to be binding on anything? I have an 883 low by the way. Anyone have the same windshield, and what did you do?

Even though it may not be binding, also look where the cable may be rubbing when you turn full left to full right and back again. Although it might not bind, there might be enough rubbing that will eventually rub through the cable sheilding. Just keep the rubbing in mind, and look over your cable from time to time to make sure its not being worn through. I slipped a peice of black vinyl tubing over the upper portion of my clutch cable to protect from any excessive rubbing damage.

I've had one on my '04 883c for about two years without any binding or rubbing It's a great place to put a bottle of Gatorade on a long summer trip. BTW, I didn't reroute any cables.

You aren't the only one that finds the instructions Harley provides (dealing with cable rerouting) to be very confusing.

In fact, the following is a quote from a BikerNet article when they were installing the HD quick disconnect low profile windshield on their '04 Sportster;

"It's actually a breeze to install, except for the beginning where the factory took a page to discuss re-routing the clutch cable on various models. I'm still not sure I understand what they were talking about, but the clutch cable moved comfortably and didn't interfere with the new Windshield. Generally, they didn't want the clutch cable running in front of the top triple tree."

In general, as long as the cables operate without any binding or excessive rubbing you will be fine.

I have a 07 1200C and installed mine in about 15 minutes. Didnt' have to move nothing. Plenty of space aroung the cables. Like you the instructions were confusing. When I seen the picture with the throttle cable all apart I was thinking maybe I don't need a windshield as bad as I thought. But like everyone else has said it was a breeze. I couldn't belive how nice it was to ride with it on. Excellent!!

I put the Quick Release shield on my 2005 XL1200R a month ago and found no need to move the clutch cable; however, the throttle cables chafed so I did move those to the inside as the directions say. Now they rub on the leather-covered riser of the shield so they won't be chafed and ruin the cable housing.

I had everything apart when I installed my detachable windshield. I had put new pull back handle bars on and had to replace the throttle cable and clutch cable with braided ones. So this is how I ended up: The best routing for the clutch cable seemed to be outside the forks while the throttle cables seemed to like it better over the top triple tree. This is where I found the least binding and rubbing to be. I'm sure that it could be different in other situations but this worked best for me.
