Question Oil Coolers, anyone using?

Et al, anyone using an oil cooler? What brand? Cost? Likes? Dislikes? Main reason for using?

I have the Harley Davidson oil cooler with the Chrome shield. Factory list price. To keep the engine cooler in the summer time and warmer in the winter time. I have the temp controller installed also.

I have a Jagg Oil Cooler, 10 Row. Cost about 300.00. It gets to 115+ here in phoenix. I was running 250-280 degrees in the summer

Running one on both my XL and my FX. IMO you can't go wrong with one. Lot's of folks say they're a waste, but I believe they can only help, especially on hot summer days, and long flat out runs.

I've also got the Jagg 10 row cooler with a thermostat oil relocation kit.

Likes: helps an air cooled motor deal with the heat. Doesn't run thru the cooler till it reaches 185 degrees. Doesn't make me tense if I have to sit at a light for a little while. Jagg goes beyond what is customary with helping you figure out any problems. The unit that fits my RK normally comes with an 'AN' fitting and I just couldn't get it to stop 'weeping' to the point I was ready to send it back. They allowed me to do a custom install using a 3130 core that uses tried but true barb fittings that once tight will not seep or weep. Hard to find customer service like that today. Jagg's cores are made remarkably well..I'm impressed and that doesn't happen too often.

Dislikes: I'm not keen on having to install a relocation kit. The more oil connections and bypasses oil has to go thru the harder it is to keep synthetic oil from seeping, but that's the nature of synthetic oil it penetrates everywhere even if you don't want it to. If I could have tapped right into the engine It would have been simpler. You've got to get all connections nice and tight without over tightening or seepage can occur.

As expected, the real bikers answered and the kids went bar hopping.

When their new great rides die at 50,000 miles they will all moan Harleys are junk but there is no getting over the fact that every bike sold is a starting point.

Good to great add on’s are the name of the game even Harley knows this as they sell all kinds of stuff to rig your ride.

I am willing to spend the money for a good cooler as this is the LIFE BLOOD of the bike, not to do so would be foolish.

Thanks for the input on synthetic oils, it will help immensely.

Thanks all for the input and keep the chrome up.

Regards,

Even in 90+ weather, 70mph, the oil on my bike never gets above 230.

If it were getting up into the 250s, I would install a cooler.

I'm absolutely not a "real biker", I'm an engineer who loves motorcycles. Take that as you will.

There are plenty of guys who have logged well over 100,000 miles on evolution sportsters without an oil cooler (but most of them did use synthetic oil). My point is that while a well designed one never hurts to have, its only necessary if your oil temps are getting too high due to your riding conditions.

seems like most of the people using them here are from Arizona and I guess that makes sense. Up here where I live it rarely gets about 90 in the summer.

I've never seen any need for one. Even in the 95*+ Florida temps in the summer, my oil temp never goes over ~230* with a good synthetic oil.
Air cooled V-Twins get hot due to lack of air flow, like sitting in traffic, and oil coolers don't do much if you don't have air flow.

Thumbs up

I am running the HD Oil Cooler, seems to help, temp stays more constant. Temp still gets up there in heavy traffic which I try to avoid. I replaced the dash mounted useless air temp gauge with an oil temp gauge to keep an eye on things.
