Default Market Pricing on a 2011 Iron and Nightster

After test riding today at my local dealer, the sales manager gave me written quotes on the 100% stock 2011 models that I liked. These prices did not include set-up, freight, admin, license, tax or security:
  • Nightster (two tone color) $12,000
  • Iron $9,500

I knew that the MSRP on these were $10,499 and $7,999 respectively. $1,500 over MSRP was not what I was expecting. I confirmed that these were not the Out The Door prices. When I questioned why these were $1,500 over MSRP, he said that the prices are "market driven".

I didn't storm-out, but I kindly thanked the salesperson and walked away. There are 3 other dealers in the K.C. area. I guess I have my baseline to price them in the Kansas City market.

Am I wrong to think that $1,500 over MSRP on 2011's is high?

Thanks

man i cant even imagine living somewhere where there is more than one place in town to buy a new harley... that being said our prices jumped from 13,400 for the iron, to 14,600 in one year, but unlike you guys, theres nothing we can do about it.

I think it is, but I got the awakening when I found out MSRP was as good as I was going to do on my first ever Harley purchase. Car buying and Harley buying are two completely different things.

That's waaaaay too high.

I usually hit dealers up in the next couple of months as the end of riding season tends to draw less sales for dealers. This usually has the sales team and management in more negotiable mood.
You can usually knock $1000-1500 off MSRP for most left over models, at least at the dealers I negotiated with.

Sad but true where I bought my bike the dealer said they would not budge on MSRP. But I had another dealer offer A sportster for 1000 under msrp. However, it was not the sportster I had in mind.

However I got over $5,000 off MSRP for my car go figure.

You can get an Iron for MSRP in Des Moines, only a few hundred miles away...

Yeah, I think that I will decide on the model and the OTD price I am willing to pay and go from there. I'm not particular about color, not in a hurry and I am a cash-buyer. I was just surprised at the $1,500 over MSRP before the add-on fees.

Cash buying doesn't really mean much. Dealers make more money off loans I believe.

I'm sorry, did I miss something here? Why don't you just get something used, better price and less hassle.

Yikes that seems high. I got 1500 off MSRP on my new 2011 48 two months ago. That stealer is full of it. Take your business elsewhere.

Yep, they get a kick back if you use their financing partner. I asked when I bought mine.
