Can I just take off the cover on the left side, it seems it might be somthing important under there, I'm no mechanical guy I don't want to screw somthing up.
If you have no means of holding the bike upright just lean it to the right against a wall or something while in gear to prevent rolling. There is a rubber o-ring in the cover that needs to be removed before doing any heating.
Here you go...My other bike is on the lift atm and I needed to change the cover on the 1200R anyway. Btw, the o-ring isnt in the cover, rather in the housing. Be alert to the spring pictured and ensure it is in place before replacing the cover.
Cleaning with paint thinner and some scuffing with a Scotch-Brite pad...
Here is that mega dollar H-D paint...
Bake in oven at 350 degree's for about 15 minutes. I used some foil to avoid having to touch the part again before spraying. The paint wrinkled nicely for me this time without any further heating. The derby cover is a high wear area for those with mid controls...being painted may be good for future touch-up's.
That's looks good Rick, but I'm looking to paint the cover. Where the plate goes, and the clutch is, your is already black, mine is grey, but I do appreciate the plate, I want to paint that black also.
Same for any part tho you have more work to do before taking the primary cover off. There will be oil to drain and of course the clutch cable to disconnect. Nevermind about leaning the bike over and remove the footpeg mount for easy access.
Aw heck...now your gonna make me go out there and swap that cover again lol...
The preheating is not a bad idea, actually. When I spray guns with Norrell's Moly Kote, you heat the parts up, spray them, then bake 'em. Finish lasts forever. If I were to paint bike parts, that'd what I'd use, but that's just me.
And why laugh at the guy? He's here to ask questions...I say Welcome. We were all new to HDs once, I still am.
If you read his post he says to laugh freely. I was holding it in all day so once he so shoot, I shot.
I agree on your procedure and I highly recommend it
