Default Im a noob, with a question.

Ok feel free to laugh, but here we go. I have a 08 sportster, I want to take the covers off and paint them black...(the one that covers the front part of the belt, and on the other side, covers the shifter I don't know what they are called. Where the Derby plate is.) It looks easy but I'm new at this. I found some hi temp flat black paint at the auto zone...am I an idiot or is this totally do able

The front pulley/belt cover is easy, its just a cover. The other side is a wet system. I wouldn't take that off. Best bet on the left side is to tape off the motor and paint it on the bike. If you replace the derby cover with a different one, make sure the bike is leaning more to the right so no oil comes out of the cover.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ..........okay now tht my free laughter is over with, You could possibly find someone willing to trade covors. Are yours Gray, aluminum, chrome? You could even trade and end up with cash in your hand.

Id say give that a shot before painting.

When you use that high temp paint, you need to let the engine run for 4 hours, or bake it on in an oven (Thats how it used to be, it may have changed). If its not baked on, It will peel off and look like you have oil all over your covers

To do it properly I would take the covers off. Make certain you clean the surfaces and scuff to get the paint to adhere. A little cure time in the oven at low heat would'nt hurt either.

Are those high heat parts or will any motor paint work?

you don't even have to scuff the motor, its textured. just make sure it is really clean and you'll be alright. your best bet is to go to Harley and buy their black, textured paint for engines. but im sure high temp paint will work just fine.

If you go the Harley paint route be advised that it is very high dollar and you must heat the parts before spraying...otherwise the paint will not wrinkle. I have had to go back over parts with a heat gun to finish the job before.

The preheating is not a bad idea, actually. When I spray guns with Norrell's Moly Kote, you heat the parts up, spray them, then bake 'em. Finish lasts forever. If I were to paint bike parts, that'd what I'd use, but that's just me.

And why laugh at the guy? He's here to ask questions...I say Welcome. We were all new to HDs once, I still am.

Can I just take off the cover on the left side, it seems it might be somthing important under there, I'm no mechanical guy I don't want to screw somthing up.
