Hi guys, Not sure whats the problem but I'm hoping you guys can shine a light to this matter.
My baby 2011 Sportster48. I did a 2" tank lift with ignition coil and key relocation. Put everything back and tucked all the wires under tank to give it that nice clean look. OK! so everything is well, she starts, runs, all electronics works. Except for the Speedo (TACH). Tach works first 5min or so in the run, then the tach stops working, but all the electronics still works and the bike still runs. anyone got any idea? i traced the harness back everything seems connected fine. but id like to pick someones head as to where exactly the wires runs through... thanks in advance...
anyway, i took everything apart again and button her up together. same thing.
everything else works, she runs great except that the tach would die on me.
I'm completely stumped. so if nothing else, i might have to just get her serviced.
I believe the tach gets it's info from the Serial Data wire which is also connected to the speedometer for trouble code and other info. I think the wire is either green or blue. I would check the connector attatched to the speedo as the wire is jumpered from one connector to the other at that point. Make sure the wire isn't broken inside the insulation or something. Also check the pins in the connectors and make sure they didn't get pushed back up inside the connector.
Did you pull the battery cable before you started the mods? It doesn't take much to mess up the electronics in gauges. I'd start by pulling the negative battery cable and giving the residual power time to drain off (sort of like doing a cold boot on a 'puter - gotta give it a couple of minutes before you restart).
K, heres the update. check, double checked, and triple check. same issue. the speedo (tach) dies during the run. but i found that if I kill the engine and turn her back on the speedo(tach) comes back. so anyone has this problem? or is it just me. Most thread i read here don't have this issue.
What is up guys? Well, took the 48 out for a nice ride after she hibernated for some time. I mean only 2300 miles since 2010. So, i pretty much still have this problem. Toms River NJ Harley seem to cant get her fix the last time i took her in for the service. Anyway, I video her first day out this year. You'll see what i mean by the speedo dying on me....
