I just bought a 79 XLS 1000. Put in new battery. checked all the wire connections. 1-When I try to start it it acts like the timing is too far advanced. 2- sometime it acts like a dead starter button. After several times it started and seamed to run okay. Is the most likely problem the relay, solenoid, or starter.
from the information you gave me(us) , the answer is yes...its probably one of the 3 ...something that would help is to know what it does when you push the button...does it click, and if it does where is the click ..also figuring out which is the problem is easy enough with a meter....hit the button and check for power at the starter if its there it is prolly the starter solenoid, if not move back to the relay ...

It could be timing - Get manual and check/set timing.
If you get a click the switch and relay are working.
Remove the plugs and push starter button, If it turns over fine the solenoid is good.
Put the plugs back in and push starter button, If the starter wont hardly turn the motor then suspect the starter is weak.
Only a long shot, is there any chance someone installed high compression pistons or a 1200 cc kit on that bike? If so, you might need a more powerful starter.
