More Help Please...
BEFORE: HD dealership told me different times that whatever pipes/mufflers I put on my bike, I needed a Stage 1 air cleaner and tune... Several of you told me if I changed only my mufflers I didnt need the Stage 1 air cleaner and tune... frankly I believed you... I bought Cycle Shack mufflers, and because my bike is still under warranty, etc I decided to go ahead with the Stage 1 air cleaner and tune as recommended by HD dealership... No problems then with the warranty... right? Scheduled for next Friday....
NOW: Today, while at HD, I was told that they were only talkin in the past about Screaming Eagle mufflers, and that they could do a Stage 1 tune, butI would have no warranty... they told me nowI need a $400 race tune... I think im being fuked with... [:@]
ShouldI put the stock air cleaner back on the bike and eat$150 or what... Suddenly, this all isnt makin much sense.... [&:]
Find a different dealer or talk with the General Manager about this.
Also call HD Customer service and let them know what you were told - (414) 343-4056 is the Customer Service number.
Ask your dealer to put in writing that simply installing CS exhaust will void your warranty.
Here is some good info: http://www.impalaclub.com/naisso/magmoss.htm
You should not need any type of race tune, etc. I have the Screamin Eagle air cleaner, Cycle Shack pipes, and did the carb re-jet and idle air mixture adjustments. The bike is perfect. I even took it to a Dyno just to see if I had come close to hitting the right setup. The dyno guy told me it was "dead on".
I first installed just the cycle shack pipes, without any other carb or air cleaner work. It was fine. Not really any increase in performance, just a better sound. I rode the bike with that setup for over 3 months, and around 5,000 miles. I took the bike in for some minor warranty work at 2 different dealers during the period of time. Neither dealer said a word about my warranty not being valid. They just completed the warranty work (to the best of their ability) and all was good. Well, at least it would have been if they'd fixed the problem, but that's a different discussion.
After I completed the Stage 1, the bike runs great. No carb farts, sputtering etc. Much faster warmup time. A lot more power, and only a 1 mpg decrease in average fuel efficiency.
Oh, my bike is an 06 883L.
Regardless of Cycle Shacksor the Screaming Eagle mufflers, the Stage I download should be the same. I know losing the warranty soundslike crapbut unless they gave you more than 2 years its not such a big deal. Two years goes fast and with a few exceptions, most never need the warranty during that time. And for what its worth, I've never heard of a bike failing because of the use of aftermarket exhaust.
There are new restrictions out there that dealers are all slowly and cautiously getting their hands around. It seems like some are more restrictive than others. My local shop put a sign up recently stating they would no longer sell or install SE performance parts. I had work done on my Softail that was covered by warranty. Work was completed latter part of November. I have the Screaming Eagle Race Tuner (SERT) installed but they still did the work and warranty covered it all. BUT. . . . . . . .
Your experience may differ. There's no way to gain any useful information from comparing one personâs experience with their dealer to yours. My dealer doing workdoesnât guarantee yours should or will. It can add to a conversation with your service manager and might lead to your better understanding.......IF.........he can explain what he can and canât do and why. But thatâs about it.
Your options are not limited to the race tuner. The least costly is the download. The dealer should offer the Stage I download â we arenât sure yet if you can get it. Estimate $100 +/- for that. Next option is a fueler. It is similar to the tuner but with limited functionality; only adjusts AF ratio. More $$$ than a download but less than SERT. There are some alternative tuners you can buy that offer similar functionality to the SERT for less $$$.
Iâm partial to owning my own tuner because I prefer to wrench my own bike. Itâs more expensive up front compared to carb jets but once you have a tuner, you can adjust the bike for just about every mod youâll ever do. It pays for itself in 4 engine mods (assume $100 ECM download from a dealer each time you changed something. 4 x $100 = SERT).
My advice is check back with your dealership and get the straight scoop before anything. You didn't waste your money. The Stage I is a worthwhile mod. You are half-way there already. Follow through. Once you figure out what your dealer can and canât do for you, then you can decide the best option for you in terms of tuning â DIY or letting a mechanic handle it.
Good luck.
They can do a download to an EFIbike for about $100 which is a one time deal to adjust the AF ratio to support a new air clenaer and/or exhaust. The alternative is to buy a tuner which gives you more things to adjust and you can DIY the project.
Its EFI'sequivalent to a jet kit that has every jet you'll ever need. The drawback is that it is expensive by comparison.

Go to the general manager and complain. They are flat out lying to you.$400 to tune your bike? Are they fricken nuts?I bought both of my jets for about $15 and set if stainless steel carb bowl screws with allen heads.I haven't even hit $20 for the tuning. It runs with way more power than before. There are detailed instructions available for a rejet which you can do trust me.If you replace the bowl screws with allen heads you can tune further without even removing the air cleaner.I didn't even remove the carbs from my bike and the wifes bike.

Your warranty should not be affected by use of non-Harley-Davidson parts. The Magnuson-Moss Act protects you. Sure they will not warranty your pipes...............CS exhaust............Cycle-Shack made the SE exhaust for pre '04 Sportsters!
