Well I just purchased my first Harley!!! A 1977 XLT, it is the one that the seller was trying to diagnose the generator/ charging problem... he didn't get it done.
1. What shop manual do I want to purchase... Once I fix the charging problem I can ride.... But... This hog is ugly, so I need to begin the restoration process.
2. The xlt is rare but only because there was no demand for the touring model, so I am inclined to try to restore it without going crazy origional... so the speedo and tach, cheap plastic origionals, do not work, I am thinking a chrome metal set would be a nice improvement... any suggestions?? other than that alot of cleaning and polishing, probably stripping the frame and painting or powdercoating, painting the sheetmetal, I'm thinking white, and installing either origional or improved parts... turn signals taillights etc...
It all sounds easy right? Thanks for your iron head advise.

Buy the correct Harley workshop manual first. Other brands tend to be very general, even wrong, so take them with a pinch of salt, you may find they don't even mention your bike. Also use search on here for 'xlt' as someone recently posted a brochure photo of one.
