I bought a H-D 14" Q.D. WS, but found out that it was too small. Bought then a 3mm thick "lexan" plate and made a new WS myself, retaining the OEM hardware:
here the template I drew on thin cardboard, the inner pattern is the original 14" one, I drew out the windshield I wanted, being 1" broader on each side and 5 inches higher. No buffeting anymore, I now enjoy my commuting:
I dint like the look of a full faring on my Iron XL883N. So I made a decision for a small faring. It relay shine on speed over 50mph. Here is a link to my BlackShadow
that is the one i plan to get. (buyin my first bike in the next couple days-weeks)

i only want it for the highway runs... when i take her out on the highway it will be 1 hr to my friends before we head out riding...or 2.5 hrs to my cottage.

Yes it is easy! Less than a minute to take off and about 2 to put it on!. When you get the detachable kit, have the right tools, get it right the first time take a little time.

Don't sweat the look of it. They tend to grow on you visually once attached. HD is more expensive, but leaves nothing on the bike when you take it off. On and off in 30 seconds. Check out the Super Sport Quick Detach. $315 at the dealership. 18 inches tall. You'll get some buffeting, but much better than holding on for life at 70 mph w/o one.

I will check out the dealership. I have been looking at different options online and yea I am tired of holding on at 70 mph.
If you want a windshield that looks good on a sporty, look into a windvest. They are small but do alot. They aren't cheep and it will take about one minute to take off.

That's what I have on my Nightster. Top notch quality, looks ok better than most but I still think it looks best without. Have it off for cruising around town and throw it on if I plan on highway travel.
If you want something for just long distance high speed halls do yourself a favor and get a bigger shield. Looks aren't important when you are doing 400+ miles a day on the interstate to get to the next stop. You'll be thankful you got a bigger shield that is able to send most if not all of air around you. The top of the shield should be at your nose when sitting on the bike to send the air over your head. Any shorter and you are going to get all of the turbulent air coming off the shield straight in the head which makes it even worse than riding without a shield and causes tons of neck strain. I have the 18" compact quick release shield from Harley. Its a perfect size. Its pricey but top notch. An added benefit is it leaves no hardware behind when you take it off.
