Default modifying HD speedometer on 2012 iron

Has anybody popped open the speedometer on the iron? I have been wanting to get a tachometer but I dont want to load up the bike with a bunch of gauges, I like the look of the single gauge on top. So I got to thinking, in my old car I opened the bezel and replaced the bike lighting with white leds. So I know its doable on cars but is something like the doable on a bike? Basically what I was thinking was to open it up and to maybe somehow find a red translusent paint and paint the mph notches where each gear redlines. So i know where I'm at in that gear but without a tach.

Just a thought, what are you guys opinions?

here is a rough sketch of what I'm trying to describe.

Keep riding it. Once you get used to the bike, you'll be doing all of that by feel and you won't even be looking at the speedo!

But, to answer your question, I've read that you are not able pop open the unit. If you still want a tach in a single unit, check out the Dakota Digital. It's a bit expensive, but it has a sweeping digital tach as well as some other awesome features.

I like the idea. Even though you get used to knowing when to shift by sound, the way you have it laid out it looks neat and unobtrusive. I know that I don't really have a steady hand to do that though.

If you remove the gauge holder from the speedo, which is also the handlebar clamp and replace it with a handlebar clamp could you not put the HD one so there is a tach and the same speedo?

Just a thought. I'd rather have 2 gauges than 1 DD but I'd use the DD if there wasn't another option. Anyone know?

You can go that route, but for the price of that kit I'd personally still stick with the DD as it has way more features.

I like having the tach, engine temp, voltage, and gear indicator all on the HUD.

Hahahaha!! I just noticed that if you click on the "What are others saying" icon on the right of the Dakota Digital page, it links you to a thread on this forum!

Awesome!

I guess I'll be the voice of dissent. I don't like digital gauges and much prefer analog. Harley had a 2 in 1 analog speedo/tach gauge for the Sporty at one time. It was stupid expensive though. If I get a tach (doubtful), I'll get the tach kit and try to find on on eBay or CL.

Gear indicator is VERY tempting for me.
