Road by a shop this morning, consignment random parts laying around. Had a peanut tank sitting there in perfect shape. Physically looked the same as my 48 tank. He said it was an 'old peanut tank', then said something about the petcock being probably different on it so it "probably" wont work on the new fuelies. They wanted $40 for it. I thought about it so I could do some paint job on it, swap it off and not worry about messing up the stock tank paint.
He has no clue as to what a "Forty Eight" is, as most people I meet don't.
You would have to weld the Petcock shut, cost out an area for the fuel pump, drill holes, pressure test, etc. Too much work. I would have bought it and then sold it on eBay for $100, though.
why not? rene over at mercury moto is doing this all day! filling in the hole for the petcock and cutting the tanks to fit an efi pump. he even makes the weld in plates for the pump to mount to. old tanks are the ****, the old wassel style tanks, the ****!
I assume the EFI pump is inside the tank on 48s, same as on the touring models? You would need to adapt the peanut to accept the same hardware inside. That would take quite a bit of effort, except for someone with the right skills. Someone has probably done it!
