Default Speedometer just died

I was riding my 2002 XL1200c Custom Sportster when I got a block from my house and the speedometer just quit working. Its not a cable speedo its a electronic and I checked the fuses and they were good but there is a big square one with 5 plug ins on it and I dont know if that could be the problem but what was weird the odometer still showed the miles on it but the speedo didnt work and the turn signal would not turn off even when you turned the bike. Could it be a sensor or is it a grounding problem. If anyone could help me I would appreciate it

most probably the VSS (Vehicle speed sensor) its a common fault. Its located down by the shifter its bolted in the front of the gearbox with 1 allen bolt.

If the VSS was bad, it wouldn't add mileage. My wife's 02 quit last summer, just got another speedo the other day, gonna try it this week sometime when I get a break between jobs.

I had noticed alot of condensation inside the speedo the last couple years and I think that is the culprit.

I have never noticed any condensation in the speedo but I am definitely going to check that VSS. I appreciate the help thank you. Ride on Brother

I had this happen before. It was the bike angle sensor. Stopped the tach, speedo, and odometer.

I had something similar, turned out to be my rear turn signal wires had come out of there spot and got rubbed and were grounding out.

Also check to see if the Maxi Fuse has corrosion. I have seen that to cause the Speedo to stop working.
