Shifting
I will putt at 50-55 in 5th, but if I want to do any significant acceleration I will drop it down a gear.
In 5th, because of the "leverage" of the higher gearing, you do not get the same benefit of the torque at 3000 rpm that you do if you are in the lower gears at 3000 rpm.
I might not have explained that well...each gear higher than the previous is like a longer lever working against the torque generated, so the torque that translates into strong acceleration in 1st & 2nd at 2800 rpm is virtually un-felt at 2800 rpm in 5th gear.
Higher gears need to be further up the powerband to give the same (or close) kick in the pants as the lower gears.
Hahaha, I might have butchered that...it is clear in my own mind. lol
Makes sense. I would believe it's because 5th is the tallest gear. But I could be wrong. Right?
Also, I shift at those points under normal acceleration. When I'm running around town I'll shift a little higher or run a little higher. Under hard acceleration I'll shift much higher. Except when I'm in my neighborhood, I try to keep the bike as quiet as possible when I'm on my street. So far I've been respectful and no-one has complained. And I've even asked them. I don't need to be at 4000 on my strret. lol
Hated the fact the salesman tells me the price of loking at it depends if i broke something rideing wrong lol. I had a 4 speed for hevens sakes and hes telling me how to run a 5speed? I use to be certified to teach the 3 hour courses back in the late 80's to the late 90's and he was tellong me lol. I called him a few choice names in his office flipped him the bird on the way out and when i came back, threw the repost on my bike on his desk, laughed and walked out. Ya wont see me there again.
Shifting all depends on setup, and what feels right to you. If in doubt, small Tach's arnt expensive and they are easy to install.
Sorry for the long post, i had to share that lol.
