Default Starting problem...

I bought a 1999 sportster 883 off a friend. It has been sitting in her garage untouched for 3 years. I dusted it off and bought a new battery for it. I tried to turn it over but it Just had a loud click. Like a metal on metal bang. I pulled the spark plugs and pushed it around in gear, so I know the motor is not seized... What gives? Could it be a bad starter? Any input would be great!

It could be a couple issues. If it's clicking, the new battery may need a charge prior to being put in the bike as you don't know how long the battery was sitting on the store shelf. Also, clean and check all four connectors on the battery wires. There was a tendancy for the wire connection to break on the ground wire to the frame during those years, (where the wire is soldered & crimped to the connector/lug). It might not be giving you enough juice from the battery to turn it over.

Edit: I'd also fog the cylinders a couple times, change fluids & plugs, drain gas & re-fill with new, etc, prior to trying to fire it.

Thanks for the info. I think the battery is very well charged. It sounds like somthing is binding up when I hit the start button. Its one loud click around the sead( behind I think) it's not that quick clicks like when the battery is not getting juice. I'm stumped.. I tired to drain the old gas but the pressurization won't let the gas come out. Bummer, I may have to pay a guy I know to get it running....

That loud click behind the seat is probably your main breaker/fuse not allowing the current to get to the starter. Pull the triangular piece off that's right next to the battery and below the seat......Literally just pull it off, as it's held on with some rubber grommets & nipple connections. You'll see your fuse panel & main there. Try replacing the main.

Edit: And to drain your gas, it's vacuum operated, so you have to remove the fuel line & route to catch can, and pull the vacuum line at the carb/VOES side that runs to the back side of the petcock.......Hook up a breaker bleeder vac & start draining tank.........Or just remove the tank and remove the petcock to drain the tank seeing as you should probably clean the filter screen on the petcock since the bike has just been sitting.
