Default Changing out my handlebars

I've decided to change my handlebars from its OEM look to these Ape Hangers from HD. The website says its a bolt-on replacement.

Has anyone else done this with their bike? Do I need to change my riser to a lower one? Do I need to change my cables too?

Is there anything else I should be aware of when changing handlebars?

Thanks in advance.

Depends on how long your cables and brake lines are. I put on 10" apes and I had to get a longer brake line and the Clutch cable barely made it. Everything else about changing handlebars is easy.

Yes, may people have. If you change your risers to the low style it will probably put the bars about where yours are now. If you're just going for looks but want to maintain the same position I'd do that. If you're looking for something taller (those bars on your stock risers) I'd do the low style risers and speedo mount and go with 14" narrow bars. It's what I have now and I find it just tall enough to be comfortable without my hands going numb on long rides. Expect to have to change all of your cables and extend all the wires going to your controls. HD sells a wire extension kit if you don't feel like splicing all the wires and soldering in extensions.

I was hoping I would not have to change them out. Will just cost more.

That's why it's important to mockup what you think you'd like and do it right the first time. I went to the dealer and they were nice enough to hold up bars on bikes there so I could sit and get a feel for what I wanted.

My wife has mini apes on her bike and I like the way it rides.

I have those bars on my Nightster and love them but they were on the bike when I got it, don't need to extend the wires I even internally wired them and they are the stock length un less the previous owner put new switches with wires on.
