Default Backfire

Yesterday on the way home the bike backfire on me twice while rolling down the road and the speedo went to zero then up to back speed. Three days ago the the bike wouldn't start untill I turn the key a couple of times untill I saw the neutral light on. Any thoughts? Could it be the igintion switch going bad?

Loose battery cable. Exact same thing happened to me on my street bob.

The backfire is due to a brief cut in the ignition, a build-up of unburned fuel in the exhaust, followed by the ignition working again, lighting up that fuel. If it still does it after checking your battery cables, check the rest of your ignition system for loose or poor connections.

Odds are it's a bad connection that is causing this. Might be the ignition module starting to go too.

Good luck tracking it down. Intermittent troubles that can't be duplicated at will are the worst issues to find the cause. You may want to have it idling and start tugging and moving all wiring involved, inspecting all connection points for looseness or corrosion.

+1 to what the others have said......And check the 90* connectors on your coil. Mine had the same symptoms about four years ago, and it turned out to be the 90* connector just wasn't squeezing the connector stud enough. My symptoms got to the point where the bike would completely shutdown & I'd have to coast to the side of the road.....Last time I started fidgiting with wires as I was coasting to the side of the road ,and found that every time I touched that wire the bike would come back alive and speedo would jump up. Pulled the connector boot from the stud, gave it a decent squeeze with my fingers, and reattached it and you could hear it slide down the stud grooves......Been fine ever since.
