Hey guys, so I have yet to touch anything on the motor of the bike other than a simple coil relocation and wire swap and to be honest, I don't know much about harley motors as this is my first bike ('07 Nightster). The previous owner had the heads worked on (screamin eagle valves, springs and cams) and threw short shots and a standard oval looking screamin eagle air cleaner. For all I know it could be the stock air cleaner with a screamin eagle insert in it as I didn't get any paperwork for that...
I wanted to go with the Screamin Eagle Heavy Breather kit for my bike but I wasn't sure if it would be a bolt on and go type install or if I would need the dealer to re-tune the bike. After the previous work was done, the computer was re-mapped and the bike was dyno tuned...
So, before I feel any more stupid about asking this question, can anyone shed some light? Real noOb question I know, I know
Some pictures of the air cleaner with and without the cover on would help a lot in determining if the screamin eagle oval air cleaner has already been installed.
My guess is if the previous owner went to all that trouble to do the other engine work that he also installed the screamin eagle air cleaner as well. If that's the case then installing the heavy breather would have no effect in performance as they are the same thing only in different shapes.
It's up to you obviously if you want to spend the money on the heavy breather but they would serve the exact same purpose.
Without seeing the filter I can't tell 100% but if the previous owner went to all that other trouble AND had the bike dyno tuned I'm willing to bet he installed the Screamin Eagle air cleaner.
As I said it's totally up to you if you want to get the heavy breather. Are you going for a different look?
I'll leave the rest of the answers to those who have been doing this a lot longer than I.
It looks like its the SE air cleaner. But then again my intake is pretty much the same thing. Modified the back plate by hacking it up and put on a K&N filter. Pretty much the same save for the insert and mine was only the price of the filter.
