Question Clutch cable snapped!!!

My clutch cable snapped on the way home from work last night while waiting at a light.

Now I can see how actually using your kill switch on a regular basis would come in handy. If I were down shifting, coming to a stop and it snapped, I would have had to kill it coming to a stop. (instant reflex - VS - fumbling to kill it).

Anyway, Im looking at my service manual. Just so I understand this correctly. I'm draining the fluids, removing the whole cover on the left side?

I'm looking at "Ronnies"... Clutch cable is around 79.00. J&P anywhere from 29.-79, Ebay 20. and up. Should I be replacing anything else while I'm there? Does anyone know the stock measurement of the cable for my bike?

Never done it before but can't be that ****ing hard.

1980 Sportster XLH 1000

Thanks. Nick

Almost looked like the cable pulled out of the ball on the clutch lever side. I couldn't tell you at the moment. I left it at the gas station, will pick it up in the morning.

15 minutes? I was thinking closer to 45+ minutes

Looking back at "Ronnies", (46-3/4) That must be overall length?

Yup. Retired HMC/3MC

$26.00 for cable, primary fluid. Now I just need to get the bike from the gas station, time to do the job. Wish me luck.

That happened to my sisters Sturgis 3 weeks ago. I pushed her in neutral so she could drop it into 2nd and go. We rode 50 miles home running every stop light & sign. She did one hell of a nice job shifting without her clutch.

I tried dropping it into 1st. Died. Can you start out by shifting it straight into 2nd without killing it? Now I feel like a dumb-***. Going to try it at the gas station.

If you had someone to push you, then chances are yes.

I can start it in neutral. Do I have to run/push it to get it moving and then shift up?
Have to run errands. Will download pics of the primary oil draining. Carmel color is not good!!! WTF?!

I found a small piece of metal when I removed the primary cover, and a brass washer. Both pieces fell out as I was removing the cover. Then there's what looked like a paper ring gasket resembling a washer for one of the posts that pass through the primary cover. I'm guessing that's the "shifter post".

Anyone with a 1979-85 service manual for Sportster XL/XR 1000cc 4 speed.... Page 6-10 would the brass washer be part number 10 in figure 6-5?

Why would my primary oil be caramel color? Water? I see what looks like tiny cracks in the cover. Is that an easy fix or should I be looking for a new primary cover? Kind of mad Indy didn't suggest new gasket. He didn't offer up the oil either. That was just an after thought I had as I was paying for the clutch cable.
