Default Forward Controls

Hi i hope someone can help me out. I have a 1989 XLH 1200. I am putting new forward controls on and have already run into a few questions.
1 - After removing the shift side peg there remains a threaded bolt end sticking out of the primary. How does one remove this?
2- After removing the brake peg, how do your remove the brake pedal? There doesn't seem to be a way to remove the rod that holds it in place.
I am sure I will have more questions as i go, but any help here would be great, and if you know of any other "bumps" in the forward control road, i would greatly appreciate a heads up.

Thank you
Charlie
