Default Still think I'm running lean with x14ied's

Ok...so posted a couple of weeks ago after I noticed some serious popping on decel after I installed a heavy breather and x14ieds. I was already running V&H slip ons. It popped a little with just the slip ons, but it seems to be more noticeable after the new air cleaner and x14ieds. Also more loud pops. Didn't get a whole lot of response other than a couple of people telling me not to worry about it.
I changed my oil today and decided to pull the spark plugs to see what they looked like.......the tips were definatley white. Once again I ask.....Cause for concern, or am I worrying about nothing????

Xied's will not help popping thru exhaust. You are good to go. If you want to remove the popping owill need to go back to something close to the stock mufflers

Decel popping is NOT necessarily from a lean condition.

Decel popping is unburnt fuel that is burning in the exhaust.

There is always going to be some unburnt fuel in the exhaust...even if you are running lean.

Decel pop occurs when:

1. You are running so lean that the exhaust is superheated, then you will get decel pop from that.

2. You are NOT to lean, but have the correct air/fuel mixture in the exhaust for it to burn. This most often occurs with high flowing pipes which increase the air in the exhaust and results in decel pop.

3. They can also happen if you have any extra air being introduced into the exhaust chamber via a leak at any point from the exhaust manifold down.

In MOST cases decel pop is NOT from being too lean. But it can be cured by richening up the air/fuel so that the ratio is no longer conducive to burning and instead get expelled out the end of the pipe unburnt.

If you are not running too lean (and decel popping is NOT the way to know) and want to get rid of it, you will need to richen up your mixture more than it needs to be to run optimally so that it will stop.

Another choice is to change the air in your pipes with baffles or Thunder Torque inserts. By reducing the air you are richening up the A/F mixture in the pipes and may stop the popping that way.

Why did you bother to read them? I haven't been able to find anyone that has found it to work with EFI since the ECM can adjust the mixture any which way it wants within parameters. If I were concerned, I'd check the ECM if you have some way to datalog or just hook your DVOM to the O2sensor to see what it is reading.

Little past my mechanical and electrical knowledge aklim!!! Just trying to figure out if anyone else on here with a similar set up has experienced the same thing, and what they did to try and remedy, if at all.

Get a DVOM. You will need it sooner or later. It needs to have probes like THIS. Sooner or later you are going to need it or become a "parts replacer" where you throw parts at a problem or perceived problem till something happens. You hook it up and you can see what you are doing. After you are done, seal the hole with liquid tape or whatever it is called.

What you are looking for is the voltage. Is it high or low mostly. Yes, it goes between 0.2 to 0.9 and keeps moving but where is it generally for a given RPM. That will tell you if it is running lean or rich or whatever. Plug reading is very approximate. I have used it on a Jetski but I would go to the middle of the lake, change the plugs, run WOT for a bit and then check. VERY imprecise and not as useful. Even if it says it is running ok, what do you know? It i running ok for the riding you are doing. Doesn't tell you what it does at say the decel point.

Sounds like you might need more than a fooler. I'd get the PowerVision so you can datalog and tell others what you are going thru and they can help you.

Aklim is right, i havent found any way to actually read the plugs in my EFI bike. Last bike it was just get above certain RPM,s and then hit the kill switch and glide to a stop and check plugs. EFI, that doesnt work. I actually like the way Aklim is describing how to check. Glad i have always had a volt meter or two that work at all times. Sure is one of the most handy tools i have.

Get a PowerVision or TTS. Theres a reason the x14ieds are cheaper. They're a quick fix and while sometimes they work, they never work efficiently.

Yes! Thank you for spreading the correct information. I see way too many cases of popping=lean when it is not correct (usually).

I have SEPST from HD and if the wife didn't gift it to me, I'd have gotten PowerVision. Still, since I am not doing it myself and having it dyno tuned, it isn't all that bad.
