HID head lamp installation
I'm forgot the name of the HID kit but if you'd like to know I can find out but I'm sure kits are pretty universal to how they are set up. I can say though that there is no relay to it.
So looking at how the lamp wiring is set up, it looks like I have to take off the gas tank to get to the wires so that I can connect the HID wires to the electrical system. Can someone confirm this? Or is that not necessary?
2nd, looking at the stock head lamp it looks like the wires connected to the bulb are soldered on. And if I follow where those wires originate from it looks like it goes under the tank as well.
Everything just seems so compacted under the tank. If you guys new pics for a better visual, let me know. Or if ever had any experience in installing HID kits on Harley sportsters, could you share your knowledge and know any website or YouTube video I may look up.
I've searched YouTube but only have seen demonstrations on touring bikes. Thanks people!
There are 2 types of bulbs that could be your headlight for HID. Either Single Beam (1 Bulb for your Low Beam, 1 Bulb for your High Beam) or Dual Beam (1 Bulb runs both your high and low)
Judging by your description it sounds like you have a single beam setup if you have no relay. The relay is a must when running dual beam kits because this becomes your new switch wire. No relay = No switching from Low Beam to High Beam
Single beam set ups on a motorcycle or car is usually an easy set up. Your bulb should have 3 sets of plugs. 2 that plug into your ballast and a plug or pins that plug into your factory harness. When you unplug your halogen, take the pins or plug from the HID bulb and plug it right up to t he factory harness wire. Thats it

Then the bigger problem arises, what to do with the ballast and the other small black of plastic that comes with it. Some say tape it to the bottom of the tank and others say bolt it to the front down tube.
I sure could use a little assistance with this one just so I can get it off the floor and not feel that I wasted money on an item I will never use.
ive been doing car audio/fabrication for over 5 years. i took the whole housing off. took all the factory wiring out of the housing and solder all my connections under the tank. next i cut the HIDs plug and solder a 12 gauge extension. bought the same loom they use in the factory( kind of a mesh, and shrink tube) run all my wiring along the factory one. hid the ballast/relay pack under the seat. ive had it for over a year and it has never giving me problems.. lmk if i can help

haha, seemed a little too complicated for me that way, im not electrical saavy what's so ever..
So I learned for to take off the tank, and on my 2012 sportster, the quick release on the fuel line was really useful. The real pain of the *** part was unpinning and repinning the connectors cause the hole in the housing where the lighting wires go into to was way too small for the HID wires to go through. I read about people drilling holes but 1)seemed too damaging for my experience and 2)different have the tools to drill holes anyways. After learning how to remove the pins, it was a pain in the *** at first but i got used to it (bobby pins are great if you dont have the specific tools)
I after feeding the wires into the hole and repinning back into their shrouds i basically just connected everything up (+ to the battery, - to a screw on my light housing, light to ballast and relay...)
I recorded my progress and will post a youtube video on it sometime soon..
But i say i kind of successfully installed my HID because it turns on but if i flip my highs on...it stays on when i try to flip it back to low. the only way for my lows to come back on is to disconnect everything from light. So if anyone could help me out on this one...please let me know..
I read about "flipping wires" around. but i actually blew out a fuse trying to flip wires around. what i switched around was the oem wires that connected the stock light to the bike. i switched the wires where it connects under the tank. the colors of the wires are black, white, and yellow. Im not sure what corresponds to each color. and if i did switch wires around, do i still have to mirror the switch on the opposite side of the connection?
