Couple questions, but i'll start with the background. 1988 XLH Deluxe, with a 1200 conversion done some time before she came to me. She now has around 55k total miles, (don't know when the conversion was done.) I have now developed a rediculously loud valve tap... the thing is, the valve tap INTERMITANT. It comes and goes depending on the speed/conditions that I am riding.
When I'm in stop and go traffic or riding below highway speeds, it taps so loud I can't even hear my exhaust (and I'm running straight pipes!) Once I get on the highway and open it up, the tap goes away and she runs like a top.
I've been able to narrow it down to the exhaust valve on the front cyclinder...I'm guessing it's a leak down issue.
Here are my questions:
Since she started as an 883, and had a conversion done, how do I know which tappets to buy?
Is a cam/valve/lifter replacement part of a 1200 conversion?
What gasket kit should I buy when I go to fix this?
Should I definately replace all 4 tappets?
Thanks in advance for any insight that you can offer!!
Thanks for the info Scuba...can't believe it but I'm actually looking forward to when the weather gets bad. I can't justify taking the bike apart when I can be riding it, but she's coming all apart this winter. Time for a new paint job...figure since i'm going to be pulling wrenchs anyway, now's as good of a time as any.
