Sometimes (1 out of 10 times) when I try to start my bike, it has this long (3 to 4sec) pause when I hold down the ignition (start button). I can feel as though the bike is "building up or being held back " during this pause but it doesn't really make a sound besides that. Do you guys have a clue what it might be? The battery is relatively new and it keeps a charge very well and all connections to the battery are nice and tight and smeared with dielectric grease.. can it be due to the bike being flooded? After this pause, usually I can hear the ignition go off and everything is fine. Sometimes I have to give it some throttle while holding the ignition

You can eliminate that pause which happens when the first compression stroke is starting at the point the starter engages. It will do that more and more as the battery gets old and tired. Simply put the bike in 2nd gear, pull the bike backwards until you hit a compression stroke with the engine turning backwards, it gives the starter a head start by getting the flywheels rolling before it cones to the next compression stroke. No baloney.
The pause is a hesitation while the compression leaks off the first compression stroke. Its more likley to do it if you start the bike with the clutch pulled and in gear, especially if the engine is cold on the first startup of the day.

The problem can also be caused by any of the battery cable connections having a high resistance, which is usually caused a dirty/loose connection, or the crimp lugs connectors on the cables becoming loose on the cable.
Very true, my battery is now 5.5 years old and showing signs of getting sluggish, what day is it going to lay down, that is the question. Do you play it safe and get one or try to finish out this season. I am not asking this question here, its just on my mind. The Battery Tender+ still brings it to full charge in about 20 minutes after sitting a couple of days.
cHarley, I keep all the connections coated with High Dialectric grease, I take them loose now and then to clean them and get the grease inside/between the connectors. So far, no green connections.
