Default Stripped threads on primary cover

Has anyone stripped the threads on their primary cover? what did you do to fix it? Is there enough meat on the case to support using a heli-coil? I haven't taken it off yet to have a look. I must be more carefull.

Thanks in advance!

I would be surprised if there is enough meat for any added thread repair, such as a helicoil, but it will be easier to decide when you take it off. A dealer or indy may be able to advise on the best way to repair it. That could be welding and cutting a new correct thread.

My '02 Hugger just returned from the shop after getting a new primary cover. I stripped the thread when checking the tranny fluid. I talked to the shop and they said their isn't enough meat to tap to a larger size, but they have seen people successfully insert a sleeve. The problem they said is that you have to re-sleeve it and re-seal it every time you remove the bolt, and that there is no guarantee that it won't leak.

For resale value, and for my piece of mind, I had the dealer install a new primary cover. When maintaining my things, I always assume I'll sell it to a friend... It was about $400 all around with stock replacements. Considered chrome, or black even, but decided to keep it stock. Dealer prices, yes.

Cheap home fix. Try getting a longer all thread bolt (stud) and screw it in all way to bottom. If it seems to pick up 3-5 non stripped threads it will be OK. Just mark it to suit and remove it and saw off head. Now take you a nice acorn nut and SS lock washer and tighten it up. If you want them all to match just stud what you can see. Way cheaper then the motor.

Are you talking about the larger bolts, or the small ones for the derby and inspection covers?

How about using a tap to clean the threads up, then use some teflon tape on the screw threads?

If it was on the derby cover, they can be heli-coiled. Ask me how I know!
