Fork lock problems
I just noticed today that my fork lock rotates with the key, but doesn't lock the fork in place. Then it dawned on me that a few days ago I had problems engaging it...
So please forgive my ignoramisness as I ask...is this something I can replace/fix myself? Or do I need to go to the stealership to have the problem lock removed with their stuperduperspecialdealerkey? Will they then have to rekey the new fork lock or will I have a[nother] different key? Any ideas of cost?
If the problem is really just the fork lock, it is rather easy to remove. You will need to remove your tank to be able to get a drill at a straight angle to the lock pin near the top of the fork lock. You need to drill into the lock pin dead center and dead straight. Then take an easy out (although a screw might work) that fits into the hole and get in in the lock pin with a really good bite. Grab the easy out or screw with a pair of vice grips or something similar and tap upwards with a hammer to tap out the lock pin. Fork lock assembly will just pull out then (hint: insert your key and turn partway, that will give you something to grab onto). If fork lock is damaged where it gets inserted into the fork stem, make sure there is no damage to the stem itself or all your work in replacing the lock will be in vain. And if the part that inserts into the fork stem is broken off you will have to make sure you get it out of the stem too.
