The only time I've had a problem with mine over heating was in a Parade. Too much throttle bumping, and not enough movement to get air to cool off the engine.
Same here, I was in the parade called Daytona Bike Week. Nothing like 100 degrees, 1,000 bikes, and 0 air movement. All's that happened to me was the motor shut down. I don't know what the mechanics are that cause this, but that's what happened to me. What was even better is when it started spitting oil out the breather, then it would drop down onto the motor and start smoking. [:@] Ahh, yes... my liquid-cooled import riding buddies had fun with that.
Never had mine actually shut down, but stop and go traffic made it so hot that I pulled over and hung out for a bit. But that was traffic that was more stop than go.
same here, stop and go traffic in hot weather for an hour will make my bike start to make knocking noises from takeoff. Not sure what that is but it happens when it gets real hot without movement for a while.
I had the same concerns last year when caught in my first really hot day. It was 95 degrees, high humidity, low wind, and no clouds here in Michigan. I found myself at a stop light behind a big fat nasty van that was burning oil, surrounded by cages in rush hour, over fresh black asphalt.
The bike was fine. It performed like a champ. I, however, was ready for a glass of water.
That experience and the message boards made me realize that if I'm actually concerned about the bike holding up, I should probably refocus my attention on me. If the bike overheats it may spit oil, ride rough, or sputter out, while you could get heat exhaustion, and then you got some real problems.
Harley's were made to ride in the southwest as well as the north east, so dont let the air cooling fool ya. It's under unusual riding conditions that you may have problems. Like mentioned above, idling or going very slow for extended periods in hot weather.
I live in texas. I have riden in 107 is the hotest day ever. It will cause the engine to knock on take off(like others said). I think that is the gasexplodingbecause of heat and not spark. It cant be good for them to get that hot. When it is hot,I ride it easier and it does fine.
hey anubisss, i will be moving to fort irwin ca.(barstow) in april, will i have a problem with overheating in the desert....and what's this ca. emissions stuff???
