Which air cleaner and filter combo best keeping dirt out
I am going to purchase a new air cleaner and filter setup for my 01 sportster 1200 and I am looking for a little performance and most def keeping the dirt out.
Can you guys give me your opinions on which filters and air cleaner setups you like. Thanks
I have been looking at setups on ebay and there are a bunch to choose from. Its a little over whelming. Arlen ness has there own filter but im not sure how great they are.
Stock is best. Opening the box adds little measurable performance other then sound. There is no way the open mesh filter can grab what the stock Harley does. However you would be hard pressed to measure engine life between the too. However if you go with the open box you are going to get a lot more drips since there is no box to catch and hold oil that is in the vapor that gets by vent system between maintenance work.
The only reason I am changing is cause my stock setup got trashed, i took it all off and I cant ride until I get a new setup. Does an aftermarket setup make a sound difference and on which end? I already have drag pipes so I assume I will have to re jet this carb soon.

I changed the stock one in my 2012 Nightster because it's fugly.
It's bigger than a microwave and covers the engine cylinders.
VO2 is what I picked. I kind of like the raw appearance of the filter.

I had some slip ons that I ran with my stock ham can air cleaner, then after a few months upgraded the intake to the Vance and Hines VO2. It's an open, oiled airfilter, just like a K&N. On the exhaust side, I didn't notice any difference in sound, or volume. On the intake, there is a difference, I can hear it suck in air every time I get on the throttle. Even at idle there is some sound coming from of the intake, sound I didn't hear before.
I think a lot of it has to do with the V&H intake being open all the way around, I don't have a cover on it. It's not a "bad" sound, I got used to it after a week or so. I have Cycle Shack muffler pipes now, a lot louder than the slip ons I first had, and I can still hear the intake suck air when I give it some throttle.

Do you have to have a cover on it or is it just for looks? If not im gonna order the vo2
