I have been having really annoying and dangerous throttle problems the last couple of months. They have gotten much worse in the last two weeks. My throttle has been sticking open, especially when making right turns. I have noticed that the throttle body end of the tubing has been slipping out either from vibration or from tension created by turning the handlebars. It does not happen right away, but after about 5-10 minutes of riding, the little bit of play that I started out with in the throttle tightens up and the throttle sticks open. Attached is a picture of where I believe the issue is being caused. I don't understand why this would occur. There is some rust on the adjustment nut on cables under the rubber boot. Is it possible the the cable rusting could cause this issue of the throttle body end coming out of the hole and creating issues with the tension, thus seizing the cable up and keeping the throttle open? Attached is a picture after I shoved the throttle body end of the cable back in. Let me know if you have any ideas.
I have a set of Magnum Shielding Black Onyx +3 throttle and idle cables on the way for use with the Frisco Bars that I am ordering this week. I think these cables should be okay to use with the stock bars as well until I get the new bars on. If rust is the issue, this will soon not be a problem with the black chrome fittings and stainless steel cable of a much higher quality than the stock cables. I understand that I can lube my stock cables, but I would rather have a quality product on my bike than waste time troubleshooting stock crap.
I think it is worthwhile to mention, also, that this bike is just over a year old. I don't even have 5k miles on it yet, but I do live in Hawaii.
Yes, it could be your cable rusting inside and it could just need lubed. Not sure why you think the stock cables are crap.....Mine have been just fine for the past 13 years, and yes, all cables should be lubed once a year! I'll go for the $5 for a can of lube rather than the ~$150 for new cables every couple of years!
i have not had so much luck with my dealer. I took it to them to have them install my turn signal/LP relocation kit, and they ended up causing a short in my main wiring harness. Needless to say, it resulted in me not having my bike for about 2 weeks after it died on me while going 40 mph. Luckily I was close to my house when it happened.
I pretty much know what is happening, just wanted to other people's input. I don't plan to replace my cables every year. I will be putting different bars on soon, so I am changing the cables out anyway. The Magnum Shielding cables are of a lot higher quality than the stock cables, so I figured why not just replace them now.

I've had the same set of throttle cables on my '98 for 13 years, and w/a minimum of maintenance (a few drops of cable lube every 4-6 months) haven't had a problem. I'd suspect that you've got something kinked or binding - and would suggest that you investigate that.
Have you done anything with your controls lately? Check that the inside of our throttle side grip isn't rubbing the end of the bar, you can loosen the screws on your controls and slide it out if it is. Happened to me when I changed grips shortly after getting my bike, drove me crazy trying to figure it out.
