Default Plasti Dip question...

Tuesday of this week I picked up a pair of Gerbing G3 gloves. I hard wired the harness to the battery terminal. I THOUGHT I closed the side battery cover.

Fast forward to today and I'm cruising up Roosevelt Blvd at about 55 and all of a sudden I hear a metallic clanging from the left side of the bike. I immediately knew what had happened. The battery cover had flown off and crashed to the asphalt. I pull off the road as soon as could. About 1/4 mile back, in the middle of the highway, was the side cover. So I dodged traffic to retrieve it. Luckily no-one ran it over. Unfortunately, it was scratched all to hell.

I put it back on and thought to myself "Hey, what a perfect time to Plasti Dip the side covers". I went directly to Lowes and picked up a can. I went home and removed both side covers. I taped off the chrome part where the oil temp dipstick goes.

So, I'm on my second coat and plan on a third. My question is; when do I remove the taped off areas? Do I wait until it's completely dry? Or do I wait until the final coat is mostly dry and then remove the tape? I'm clueless. I've never painted anything that I've had to tape off something before.

Yes, I did search and came up without an answer. If it's been asked before my apologies. Thanks.

That's a good question and I think the answer may vary in different applications. I'm thinking when it's tacky, too wet may not come off clean, too dry may pull off where you don't want it to. But the ONE thing i am sure of is to use the blue or green tape and pull off on a 45 degree angle back onto itself, very slowly..Good luck!

if you wait until it dries, you will have to use a razor knife or exacto knife to cut the lines you have taped off, otherwise, the coating will peel by the tape...

its best to put about 4 coats, light for the first, and progressively heavier through the fourth coat. This should be completed within about 15 to 20 minutes, then you can peel the tape with no edge peeling.

Thanks guys. It's done. I ended up with 3 coats. It's not perfect but it looks good. I like the flat black on it. I made sure the battery cover is on well this time.

This Plasti Dip stuff works great. I'll be doing my helmet next.

You are one brave soul (or nuts, J/K). My wife is from Mayfair and we lived near Welsh and the Blvd for a few years in the late 80's. Not a road I'd want to be on my bike back then. Has to be worse now.

It's no better. You just get used to it and learn to anticipate all the idiots out there on The Blvd. Unfortunately you can't really get around using it.
