I went for a ride yesterday and noticed as i was going around a winding road behind a slow moving car when the speed dropped and i was in the wrong gear there is a sort of metal sound clanging noise as it chugs? just wondered what the noise was? im running stock pipes again at the mo so engine seems more noisey than when slip ons are on!
I do find that it needed to be in 3rd gear as only doing 30-40mph and if i put in 4th it would chug and make a noise? I know they are quite torquey engines but i do find it requires a fair bit of gear changing in slow traffic? I gave it a run on the motorway today and she flys on an open road! it a 2012 iron 883 with k&n filter and xieds fitted.
That is the sound of the lower end bearings being abused, please don't lug your Sportster, that is the most damaging thing you can do. Or it could be detonation which is also a bad thing.

Thanks for the explanation! I've also been wondering what it was. Like Harleyglen, I too get that on my 2007 XL1200L.
The thing is, it shouldn't do that, right? Typically if you're going a steady 30mph in 3rd gear and you suddenly accelerate full-throttle, that's when you'll hear the metal grinding/clanging sound. Why is that? (sorry if that's a newb question).

That could be detonation under load causing what most people call "pinging," It is not good for the top of the pistons. Might check your jetting and timing if possible.
