Default My Sporty is Almost Ready for Touring

My bike is almost ready for touring.

I just finished installing the highway pegs with the HD highway peg brackets and the HD Heel Raisers with the Boot Dr mini floor boards on the mid controls. The most time consuming part was all the adjusting. I had to adjust the height and angles of both the highway pegs and angles of the boards. After each adjustment I would test ride and readjust (even after the pictures). I tried all three heights on the hwy pegs and finally found the positions I liked. As I said, that took a lot of time.

I can say the setup I have now is very comfortable and offers many different legs and foot positions. It should offer nice comfort on long rides.

All I need now for long distances is to get new shocks and springs. I'm thinking I might go with the Ohlins 3-3 shocks from Howard. They're a bit pricey but since I weigh 220+ plus my bags and gear, I'm on the cusp of the Progressive regular and HD shocks. The Ohlins might give me better overall flexibility. I'm not sure yet which direction I'll go with shocks. I'll probably go with the Progressive front springs though.

As for the 1250 conversion, I'm still deciding that too. But I don't see that as an essential part of making the Sporty tour-ready.

So that's what's new.

Looks good Baka. My father (still riding at 69 years of age) has floorboards on his 01 Sportster, and he loves them. Raves about how comfortable they are on longer trips. Good for you, I hope you enjoy the new set up.

That's a fine-looking ride. Just out of curiosity, about how much has this cost you so far? I've been thinking of doing something similar to my bike but I'm not sure where to start or what to look for in price.

Nice! Very interesting peg/foot-rest arrangement. I have the same HD highway peg mounts - love them, love having choices in foot positioning even on a short ride.

When I picked up the bike last April it had 1,100 miles on it. It came with the V&H pipes, Boss Bags, Sundowner seat (I swapped even for the Mustang), QD side plates/sissybar/pad, luggage rack and QD windshield. I paid $4500 for that.

I installed the air cleaner and X14iED at around $250(?) from DKCustoms.

I picked up the Highway peg bracket from New Castle HD for around $160.

The Heel Raisers and mini boards I found from members on the forums for $140 total for both.

The BAL1 was $200.

The HD Day/brake/turn signal module was $50.

New HD bulb $20.

Buffalo leather grip covers about $25.

I think I have about $1000-$1200 invested over the purchase price as it stands. And counting. I may have missed an item, but that seems about right.

Looking good buddy.

Look at racetech front springs. I'm really happy, got the heaviest ones (I'm 240#) with the preload spacer set at half. Even with the windshield, bags, tools, heavy winter leather jacket & chaps I have not been able to bottom the fork springs. Can't say the same for the rear (set at # 4 of 5), but the rear does ride much better now that the front is controlled.

So, where are you planning on going?

How much are the Racetech springs and are they that much better than the Progressive springs?

I wish I had the time to just go all around. The only thing I am trying to plan for now is to visit my brother in Chicago in the spring. He's only 800 miles away but I think I'll be set. After that, I'll just have to take my rides as they come.

Looks good. I think the round A/C cover gives it a unique look for a sportster. Kinda makes it look like a road king etc.
