Default scratches on fork tubes

So I noticed a few scratches on my fork tube an I'm just wondering how bad those can be? Can I make due with them or is any scratch a call for a new tube? Both my forks leave a very fine coating of oil and I just figured the seals were cheap(James brand) or they were put on upside down(is that possible?)

1) Where are the scratches located on the tube? A picture is very helpful in this case. Location is important as to their impact on function.

2) The fine coating of oil could be a leaking seal. It could just be residue that is continually wiped as well.

3) Yes, it is possible to install fork seals upside down, although you need to be an incompetent mechanic to have that happen.

Here's the best picture I can take at the moment. The more I look i think I could polish them out, maybe.

Well for #3 they had no indication of which way they go so i just put them in. In fact I may have just messed them up because I was rough installing them.

Use some fine metal polish and 0000 steel wool?

Use caution and care whenever installing any kind of "seal." They are designed to be delicate.

So I am looking at prices for another slider tube, just in case, and I just want to see if they are all the same size? The service manual usually designates differences between models, but says nothing about different lengths for different sportsters so I assume they are all the same. Also does anyone know the length of the tubes?

Always follow your manual....period. If any objections, your local dealer should be able to differentiate and make correct selections. At least the parts girl at my favorite dealer can do this....Mancuso Harley Davidson, Houston, Texas. Kristen is her name and shes the most awesome girl on the planet.
