Default V Twin Oil Needed in XL1200 ??

I've seen posted by one member in this group that there is no need to use V Twin oil in the sportster. Regular "car" 20-50 synthetic is fine. I am in no way questioning his knowledge but looking for conformation of the fact before I buy oil. I already have my 30 micron filter...just looking for others opinion before the oil change.

Thanks in advance for your responses

For your engine oil, using car 20/50 is fine, that's what I'm running, dino or syn, your choice. I'm uising Castrol GTX, which I've run for years in my VW's and Fords.

I've also got Mobil 1 75W90 synthetic in my primary case.

Mobil 1 15w/50 in the engine. And Mobil 1 75w90 gear oil in the primary/trans. Use a Gl-5 rated in the rear since that is safe for wet clutches. The car type engine oil is fine to use since it stays in the engine and doesn't mix like big v-twins, which is why it's labeled for vtwins. It has extra additives to make it safe to run in all the holes (engine, trans, clutch) sportsters don't need that, the oil is seperate so we get to run synthetic car oil which is cheaper and just as good.. Same with using car gear oil as long as its Gl-5 rated.

I use mobil 1 because lab tests prove its top 3 oil to be safe on yellow metals as well.

Harley's run separate sump engine and transmission, so the engine part is not bound by traditional "motorcycle" oils that are designed for common sump engines. Mobil1 15W-50 is nearly identical to the V-Twin, and since our bikes don't require a clutch friendly engine oil, there is no reason to spend the extra money.

And the gear oil is perfectly fine for our transmission/primary based upon THIS thread.

Not all GL-5's are safe for wet clutches or yellow metals. They need to be designed for that purpose. Their original design was for hypoid gears, which does not automatically mean they are safe in a wet clutch situation. Harley big twins are not common sump, they use separate sumps for everything: engine, transmission, and primary, so they have less of a need for oil compatibility than we do.

Just to play it safe I use Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w 50 and the harley brand trans fluid.
For the few bucks extra that it costs, I really don't care.
